Metop Instruments Eumetsat The advanced microwave sounding unit a (amsu a) on board metop is an american multi channel microwave radiometer instrument provided by the us national oceanic and atmospheric administration (noaa), which is designed to measure global atmospheric temperature profiles. The mission is developed by esa (european space agency) and eumetsat (european organisation for the exploitation of meteorological satellites), and divided into two different series, metop sg a and b, with complementary sensor payloads that will orbit in pairs.

The study confirms that the gnss topside and ro observations recorded by the gras instrument onboard metop satellites are of good quality and are a valuable source of data for ionospheric research. Ten state of the art instruments will improve weather forecasts and extend climate records. from measuring temperature and water vapour, to imaging fine particles, to detecting wind across the sea surface, the instruments on board metop second generation satellites will collect crucial data.

In this work, a new tomographic reconstruction method has been developed to describe the plasmasphere using metop (meteorological operational) data. The metop series, although an independent development, is complementary to: a) the noaa poes system, b) the eumetsat esa msg (meteosat second generation) system, and c) the esa envisat system, where metop completes the mission objectives of the original poem 1 mission. Metop a has been providing meteorological data to global users for 15 years, and now the time has come to safely deorbit the satellite – but not before performing one last manoeuvre. These include nasa’s commercial satellite data acquisition (csda) program, the noaa commercial data program, the eumetsat commercial radio occultation data service, and esa’s commercial radio occultation third party mission (tpm) data service.
