Metop Eumetsat
Metop Eumetsat Metop satellites provide detailed global observations of the atmosphere, oceans and land. the metop b and c polar orbiting meteorological satellites make up the eumetsat polar system (eps) series. The metop series, although an independent development, is complementary to: a) the noaa poes system, b) the eumetsat esa msg (meteosat second generation) system, and c) the esa envisat system, where metop completes the mission objectives of the original poem 1 mission.
Metop Eumetsat Eumetsat operates two satellites, metop b and metop c, that increase the accuracy of life saving weather predictions by providing essential worldwide observations of the atmosphere, ocean, and land. The first satellite, metop a, was launched in 2006, and the third and final satellite, metop c, is scheduled for launch at the end of 2017. esa is responsible for the development of the three metop satellites fulfilling eumetsat requirements, with major instruments provided by cnes and noaa. Scheduled to launch in august 2025, the metop second generation a1 satellite (metop sga1) will be a major boost for satellite monitoring of weather, climate and atmospheric composition in europe, and beyond. Eumetsat successfully launched the first satellite of the eumetsat polar system second generation (eps sg), developed as a collaborative program between eumetsat and esa, on 13 august 2025 at 0037:50 (utc) on an ariane 62 launcher. eps sg is europe's contribution to the noaa eumetsat joint polar system, continuing and expanding midmorning orbit observations provided by the metop satellites.

Launched in october 2006, metop a, the first satellite in the series of three, replaced one of two satellite services operated by noaa and is europe’s first polar orbiting satellite dedicated to operational meteorology. Eumetsat’s mission control centre has officially taken the reins of the metop second generation a1 (metop sga1) satellite, following the successful completion of the spacecraft’s launch and early operations phase (leop). this press release features multimedia. Eumetsat’s metop second generation (metop sg) satellites will bring global meteorological observations from a low earth orbit to a new standard from the mid 2020s. a new era in weather forecasting and climate monitoring. The data and products from eumetsat's metop second generation (metop sg) satellites will continue and enhance vital contributions to weather forecasting, and climate and environmental monitoring.
