Meteosat Series Eumetsat Meteosat satellites in orbit eumetsat currently operates three satellites from the meteosat second generation, meteosat 9, 10 and 11 in geostationary orbit (36,000km) over europe, africa and part of the indian ocean. it also operates the first satellite of the meteosat third generation series, meteosat 12. The meteosat series of satellites are geostationary meteorological satellites operated by eumetsat under the meteosat transition programme (mtp) and the meteosat second generation (msg) program.

Meteosat Series Eumetsat Europe’s series of meteosat satellites has been improving the accuracy of weather forecasts for over 40 years. the first meteosat was launched in 1977 and also goes down in history as esa’s first earth observation mission. Eumetsat, the european organisation for the exploitation of meteorological satellites, operates a range of satellite programs, among them the meteosat series of geostationary satellites which has provided continuity of coverage over europe and africa since 1977. Meteosat second generation (msg) is a series of climate and forecasting missions developed by esa and eumetsat. msg satellites consist of the spinning enhanced visible and infra red imager (seviri) which is a multi spectral radiometer that is utilised for the monitoring of climate. Today the mandatory programmes consist of the geostationary meteosat second and third (msg mtg) generation programmes, providing continuous monitoring over europe and africa, and the eumetsat first and second generation polar system (eps eps sg) programmes.

Eumetsat's archive of satellite observations spanning over 40 years provides climate researchers worldwide with long term, homogeneous data, which is essential for monitoring climate change. The complete constellation of mtg satellites consists of three geostationary satellites – two imaging and one sounding. the first satellite in the series, meteosat 12, was launched in december 2022 and the second, meteosat third generation – sounder 1, was launched in july 2025. The eumetsat dcs had an availability greater than 99% during the reporting period (from 1 january 2025 to 31 december 2025). eumetsats geostationary meteosat third generation series (mtg) has begun with the launch of mtg1 in december 2022. mtg i1 took over the 0° dcs service on 25 january 2025; while the msg remains supporting the iodc service. The meteosat series of satellites are geostationary meteorological satellites operated by eumetsat under the meteosat transition programme (mtp) and the meteosat second generation (msg) program.
