Memory Relay Computer He demonstrates an auto clearing memory circuit on breadboard, using 3 relays and a capacitor, so the existing relay computer architecture doesn’t need to change. The single board relay computer (or relay trainer) is a computer whose cpu is made out of electromechanical relays (like konrad zuse's z3 from 1941), but with memory and front panel interface built from modern semiconductors (like the 1970s and 80s single board "trainer" computers, such as the kim 1).

Memory Relay Computer For clearing the memory, relays and resistors are used. for every memory address a relay is used to make a distinction between reading and writing the ram memory. I'm exploring different memory options for the relay computer, from old school capacitor based to a more modern static ram that has way more memory than we'll ever need. When the hold line is high then if the memory relay coil is activated, the switch closes and keeps the coil activated. when the hold line is turned off, that is, disconnected from the positive supply source, then the coil is unable to remain energized and the switch opens. A cyber sleuth investigates how capacitor based memory is making homebrew relay computers historically authentic, reviving forgotten tech with a modern twist.

So, here you see the complete system memory of the relay computer or, a relay cpu with an arduino memory. the software ist tested, the block terminals are the connections to the relay cpu data bus, the adress bus, the read line and the write line. The single board relay computer is my take on this idea. i was originally going to make a relay version of one of the smallest computers i knew, the classic pdp 8. Therefore, to start this journey i built some basic logic gates out of relays. i like relays as you can actually see the switches working moving, which i think makes a more interesting demo, well that's what the electronics engineer in me thinks :). With the exceptions of the main memory unit and the clock, all of the computer is implemented with relays. figure 1 illustrates the overall structure of the computer and the data flow between its components.
