Down below, the official kata taught at the matayoshi kobudo kodokan international are listed in order for the first four weapons as they are being taught also in okinawa at the present. Okinawa kobudo is a style of the weapons fighting developed by the matayoshis family. it was created in xix century by shinchin matayoshi and developed later by shingi, shintoku and shinko. shinko matayoshi’s son, shinpo, was a renowned master of okinawa kobudo. There are many kobudo kata that may have been lost to time due to lack of students, where as the most prominent kobudo schools prevailed. the most popular styles of okinawan kobudo are kenshin ryu, matayoshi ryu, motobu ryu, ryukyu kempo, okinawan kempo, ufuchiku, yamanni, and tesshinkan. Among the schools that have collected and kept this knowledge is the matayoshi ryu. this is our style of kobudo. in boulder kodokan, we study kata for the bo, sai, tonfa, nunchiyaku, kama, eku, guwa, timbe, san setsu kon and nunti bo. there are 5 bo kata; choun no kon, sakugawa no kon, tsuken no kon, suishi no kon, and shishi no kon. Bo hojo undo: there are 3 bo hojo undo in matayoshi kobudo. these are required for kyu ranks, and done randomly in japanese for shodan. there are 3 different versions to do kobudo hojo undo; forwards and backwards, in place, and with a mawate (turn). Fighting techniques for the matayoshi jo kata are demonstrated. techniques against armed and unarmed attacks are clearly shown.
