Mapping Sur Ridge Mbari
Mapping Sur Ridge Mbari To survey sur ridge, mbari has employed a suite of technologies to build maps of increasing detail and resolution. nested surveys provide a progressively richer picture of sur ridge. ship based multibeam sonar pings the seafloor with sound, providing a rough picture of the topography below. Mbari leveraged a variety of platforms including ship based multibeam sonar, autonomous underwater vehicles (auvs), and remotely operated vehicles (rovs) to map sur ridge.
Mapping Sur Ridge Mbari Mbari scientists worked with los angeles film production company frame 48 to visualize the terrain of sur ridge in astonishing detail. The mapping project was established to support the mapping and surveying needs of all mbari scientists. this includes analyzing previously collected seafloor data from sites of potential interest and collecting new survey data. These new maps allowed scientist jim barry to quantify the remarkable deep sea sponge and soft coral communities that call sur ridge home. mbari is developing new mapping and imaging tools to enhance research of geologic processes and the health of deep sea marine life. The maps shown here derive from preliminary data processing immedi ately following the expedition, as of 25 august 2015.

Expedition goal: during this eight day expedition aboard mbari’s flagship research vessel david packard, a team of mbari engineers and scientists will explore sur ridge with innovative seafloor mapping technologies. These new maps—for the first time—bring together geology and biology and have allowed mbari scientists to quantify the remarkable deep sea sponge and soft coral communities that call sur ridge home. The minirov successfully reached the seafloor, where the team began mapping surveys around the rock, exploring the site, and collecting forward looking mapping data. Mbari scientists worked with los angeles film production company frame 48 to visualize the terrain of sur ridge in astonishing detail. these amazing images demonstrate what’s possible when scientists and engineers work together to develop new technology for exploring the deep ocean.
