This overview paper, therefore, presents a conceptual framework that schematically maps out and describes the dynamics of interaction between social metabolism, ecological distribution conflicts, environmental justice movements, and sustainability transitions.

Over 3300 ecological distribution conflicts are recorded in the atlas of environmental justice. such conflicts particularly occur at the frontiers of commodity extraction and waste disposal. The conceptual frameworks, including environmental justice, ecosystem people, ecological resistance, eco political movements, the environmentalism of the poor, livelihood movements, and politics from below, all focus on marginalized groups fighting against harmful extractive activities. In this project we map what we call environmental justice or ecological distribution conflicts — conflicts that highlight the distributive & structural impacts of economic activities on the health and environment of specific populations.
