It’s always challenging to connect classroom learning with real world experience. but the university of pennsylvania’s wharton school has come up with a promising approach…using the latest technology to create a truly authentic scenario that can be customized to blend theory with practice. Making Virtual Worlds Penn Today It’s always challenging to connect classroom learning with real world experience. but the university of pennsylvania’s wharton school has come up with a promising approach…using the latest technology to create a truly authentic scenario that can be customized to blend theory with practice. In a class this spring, jeffrey vadala of the penn brain science center taught students to analyze virtual reality landscapes and create their own. lorraine ruppert, right, donned a virtual reality headset to work on her final project for the making virtual worlds class. In the game design practicum, students learn to work with leading industry game engines such as unity3d and unreal engine 4, hardware such as the oculus rift, the htc vive and the microsoft hololens, and they use combinations of c and c# to code their own environments. In this class, we will explore virtual worlds as they shape identities, foster social interactions, and redefine our understanding of history and human experience. this class will provide equal parts of technical skill building in virtual reality design, and engaged discussion on readings. The film starring museum conservators was one of three made by teams of penn students in the virtual reality lab course taught by peter decherney, professor of english and cinema and media studies in the school of arts & sciences. In the virtual reality lab course taught by peter decherney, a dozen students produced three films using 360 degree cameras to capture the preparation to reimagine the penn museum’s ancient egypt and nubia galleries.
