Making Math Visible
Making Math Visible Our goal is to make math visible and accessible by constructing visually engaging, publicly displayed objects that provide a tangible platform for discussion and inquiry. Visual thinking routines make math reasoning visible, boost communication, and deepen understanding by using sketches, diagrams, and structured discussion to reveal student thinking and guide responsive instruction.
Making Math Visible Making math visible doesn’t just mean using manipulatives or diagrams – it means illuminating the thinking, patterns, and connections behind the math. it means helping learners see what’s going on under the surface. By making the beauty of math visible in physical forms, we hope it will penetrate the consciousness of the general public. we believe it is essential that mathematics be part of the everyday landscape and we hope to achieve this with the project described here. See how students’ mathematics learning and achievement is accelerated through improved problem solving and conceptual understanding skills with our visible learning for mathematics professional learning, part of the visible learningplus practice series. Our goal is to make math visible and accessible by constructing visually engaging, publicly displayed objects that provide a tangible platform for discussion and inquiry.

Participants will explore how math is embedded across the day and learn practical strategies for making children’s mathematical thinking visible and meaningful. To make an acre visible, we measured enough twine to mark the perimeter. then four students, using the knots we had put in the twine to mark the four corners, walked onto the playground and we saw how large an acre really was. Before we explore the research behind visible learning, let’s consider the ways in which you may have been taught mathematics. we need to accept and understand that high quality learning may require that we discard ineffective pedagogy that we may have experienced as learners of mathematics. Math isn’t just about answers—the process matters, too. these strategies spotlight reasoning and reveal student thinking.
