Macrosystem Eddie Modules Interdisciplinary Tutorial Resources

Macrosystem Eddie Modules Interdisciplinary Tutorial Resources Modules can be adapted for any skill level to enhance students’ understanding of macrosystems ecology, computational skills, and ability to conduct inquiry based studies. Each module page includes the activity goals, step by step instructor guides for implementing the activity, and presentations, handouts and data needed for each activity. this module was developed by c.c. carey, s. aditya, k. subratie, r. figueiredo, and k.j. farrell.

Modules In this module, students will learn how to use a lake model to explore the effects of altered weather on lakes, and then develop their own climate scenarios to test hypotheses about how lakes may change in the future. The macrosystems eddie (environmental data driven inquiry & exploration) interdisciplinary team is developing flexible classroom modules that introduce undergraduate students to the core concepts of macrosystems ecology and simulation modeling through the lens of limnology. To address this gap in ecology and biology training, we developed four stand alone teaching modules as part of the macrosystems eddie (environmental data driven inquiry and exploration) program (table 1) that can be readily adapted and implemented by instructors. How can simulation models help us understand the effects of different climate scenarios? how do connections to distant systems affect local ecosystem dynamics? how do local and regional processes interact to affect water quality in lakes? “slightly familiar, i have heard of ecosystem simulation modeling, but cannot elaborate.”.

Here, we developed short (3‐hr) teaching modules as part of the macrosystems eddie (environmental data‐driven inquiry & exploration) program that engage students with hands‐on ecosystem modeling in the r statistical environment. Ecological forecasting education modules for undergraduates developed by the center for ecosystem forecasting at virginia tech. macrosystems eddie.
