At low power, lymph node structures are capsule, cortex and medulla, follicles, paracortex, sinuses germinal center: round oval zone containing pale staining cells, surrounded by darker cells.

Lymph Node Normal Histology Nus Pathweb Nus Pathweb At approximately 0.1 by 2.5 cm, the lymph node is a relatively small glandular structure that resembles a kidney bean. it has a convexed surface that is penetrated by afferent lymph vessels. Lymph node (silver) lymph nodes is one of the tissues that has a framework (or stroma) of reticular fibers. reticular fibers are composed of thin and delicately woven strands of type iii collagen. they are not visible with hematoxylin & eosin (h&e) or azan, but are specifically stained by silver. Primary follicles are spherical aggregates of small lymphocytes. secondary follicles are the site of antigen exposure, and of b lymphocytes recruitment and rearrangement; they are formed by a pale germinal centre encircled by a dark, thick border of small b lymphocytes. Using microsoft powerpoint, i developed a macro enabled slide show illustrating and describing the architectural, cytomorphologic, and immunophenotypic features of the normal lymph node.

Normal lymph node is seen here at low power. there is a thin connective tissue capsule, below which is a subcapsular sinus into which the afferent lymphatics drain from the tissues. there are follicles in the paracortical region beneath capsule. The normal or benign lymph node is composed of a collection of follicles and interfollicular areas surrounded by sinuses (spaces mostly filled with histiocytes), vessels, and sometimes fat. lymph flows from the subcapsular sinuses, through the medullary sinuses in the lymph node, and out the hilum. This is a diagram of a lymph node, cut away to show the organisation inside, into cortical and medullary regions. primary follicles: lymphoid follicles without a germinal centre. secondary follicles: lymphoid follicles with a germinal centre. these mostly contain b cells. Daily insults, ageing and toxins can alter the normal histology and primary function of lymph nodes. therefore it is important to distinguish and differentiate lesions that occur naturally during normal development and ageing from those that are induced by xenobiotics.
