My mechanic thought it was the idler arm being too stiff, but after replacing it (moog k6100), the issue is still there. anyway, him and i got to talking and i mentioned that i added a 2.0 gpm power steering pump flow restrictor in order to make the steering feel less light and floaty. Unfortunately the pump will not work with the ls power steering bracket. the two pumps are very similar but i am having trouble with the power steering after it warms up. Minor adjustment of the factory power steering lines and they hooked right up to the newer pump. no experience with relocated alternator. the clunk could be some loose steering components, likely idler or pitman arms. have someone jack around with the steering wheel while you look at it. I never noticed a change in steering effort between the pumps. if the pressure was higher from the hydroboost pump it was not enough to notice with a stock 87 g20 saginaw box.
