Lockheed F 5 C Lightning Rs Models 92289 The f 35 lightning ii strengthens national security, enhances global partnerships and powers economic growth. as the most lethal, survivable and connected fighter jet in the world, the f 35 gives pilots the critical advantage against any adversary, enabling them to execute their mission and come home safe. The f 5 lightning, a variant of the p 38 lightning, served as a dedicated reconnaissance aircraft during world war ii. developed by lockheed, the f 5 retained the p 38’s core design features while being specifically modified for photo reconnaissance missions. On that day lockheed p 38j 42 103988 (c n 2822) made its first post restoration flight flown by kevin eldridge, from their facilities. the lightning, named 'jandina iii', is owned by the flying heritage and combat armor museum. it was ferried to oshkosh by eldridge, but not flown in display. It was the most numerous version of the photo lightning, and one of the most important pr aircraft of the second world war. it could carry a wide variety of cameras, with some aircraft carrying up to six cameras.

In short, the performance of lockheed's lightning allowed unarmed photo recon pilots to get out of trouble faster than they could get into it. sadly, with the end of the war, the f 5s were deemed too expensive and too difficult to maintain to keep in the inventory. Because it has no armament, the f 5 was much lighter and, therefore, faster than the standard p‑38s, a definite plus in the unfriendly skies over enemy territory. The 374 model 322 68 19s (174 p 38g 13 los, equivalent to the p 38g 3 lo and 200 p 38g 15 los, corresponding to the p 38g 5 lo) came from the cancelled british contract for lightning iis which was taken over by the usaaf. (download a higher resolution picture by clicking on any picture below.) lockheed p 38 and f 5 lightnings are relatively uncommon warbirds. over the years i have photographed only 10.
