Laying Of First Trans Atlantic Cable 1857 Gavin Duffy Accompanied by other support ships, the cable fleet assembled at the beginning of august 1857 in doulus bay at valentia island off the south west coast of ireland and prepared to land the shore end of the cable. [1] the project began in 1854 with the first cable laid from valentia island off the west coast of ireland to bay of bulls, trinity bay, newfoundland.
Atlantic Cable Nlaying The Atlantic Cable In 1857 Contemporary Between 1857 and 1858, several attempts were made to lay a submarine telegraph cable across the atlantic. the whole cable was made by the gutta percha company of london in lengths of two miles which were then spliced together to give two equal parts. 1857: the first attempt to lay a transatlantic cable was made using the ships hms agamemnon and uss niagara, but the cable broke after a few days. 1858: the second attempt also failed when the cable broke again. Cable laying commenced on 6th august 1857; with the intention of the niagara laying the first half. after 4 days with 335 miles of cable laid, the brakes on the paying out mechanism were applied too quickly, causing the cable to break and be lost irretrievably in 2,000 fathoms. The cable began to be laid in 1857 off the coast of ireland where the cable broke over the telegraph plateau which is over 3000m deep. following this failure construction was abandoned for the year and the ships; hms agamemnon and uss niagara were refitted for a second attempt.

This is a short animation showing the approximate route of the first trans atlantic cable. This initial optimism led to the speedy financing and provision of a cable laying expedition in 1857. difficulties with the cable and laying techniques led to delays and after the cable was laid it soon failed. The cable snapped on the first day, but was recovered from the bottom and repaired. a few days later, mid atlantic, the cable snapped again, this time in water 3km deep. Newfoundland & valentia harbour, through the efforts of the knight of kerry (v7), were selected as termini of the first transatlantic telegraph cable a project led by american entrepreneur cyrus field.
