While land art has supporters who give value to expression of art, cynics will compare their argument to almost identical statements made by large corporations involved in mining, drilling and other natural resource intensive industries. In this essay, the author canvasses these charges and argues that some land art is ethically and aesthetically defensible, and that some has great and rare potential in both realms. In academic discussions, there is no consensus on what this term actually means. certain scholars use the term “land art” in a rather broad sense, referring to similar art practices (e.g. “environmental art”), while others use it to refer to a strictly defined art movement.
