Irma Stern Look At Me Obelisk Art History Stern was recognised for her artistic practice and exhibited in south africa and in europe from the 1940s on; her work was presented at the venice biennale several times in the 1950s, with particular focus in 1958. she was granted the guggenheim foundation national award for south africa in 1960. Almost one hundred solo exhibitions were held during her lifetime both in south africa and europe, including germany, france, italy and england.
Irma Stern Archives Of Women Artists Research And Exhibitions The norval foundation is proud to announce the opening of irma stern: a life of displacement, a landmark series of exhibitions tracing the extraordinary life, journeys, and artistic legacy of one of south africa’s most celebrated modernists, irma stern. Over 40 paintings, drawings, and watercolors from international collections, primarily south african, enter into dialogue with works by the brücke artists and invite visitors to (re)discover irma stern. Irma stern travels extensively in europe and explores southern africa, zanzibar and the congo. these trips provide a wide range of subject matter for her paintings and give her opportunities to acquire and assemble an eclectic collection of artefacts for her home. This retrospective brings german south african artist irma stern back into view, while tracing her position within german expressionism and the impact she had on modern art in africa in the 20th century.
