Impact Based Forecasting Informs Anticipatory Action Anticipation Hub Impact based forecasts often serve as the triggers for forecast based financing mechanisms, and are therefore a prerequisite for many anticipatory action programmes. The publication also embraces the concepts of anticipatory actions – using weather and climate information to underpin humanitarian interventions such as shelter strengthening before a tropical cyclone makes landfall and using forecast based financing to limit the impact of a drought or flood.

The anticipation hub is an online knowledge and exchange platform for practitioners, scientists and policymakers to enhance their ability to anchor anticipatory action in the humanitarian sector, and subsequently reduce disaster risk and adapt to climate change. Impact based forecasting enables anticipatory actions and revolutionizes responses to weather and climate crises, providing national and local authorities the opportunity to anticipate and coordinate preemptive measures to mitigate the impacts resulting from climate related events and hazards. Session objectives the session will highlight how disaster impact data can be used to: inform anticipatory action through impact based triggers strengthen impact based forecasting and risk models identify high risk and marginalised population groups identify and assess effectiveness of early actions.

Session objectives the session will highlight how disaster impact data can be used to: inform anticipatory action through impact based triggers strengthen impact based forecasting and risk models identify high risk and marginalised population groups identify and assess effectiveness of early actions. While anticipatory action is currently developed by ifrc and national societies to anticipate impacts of extreme weather events, the scope of this framework includes current efforts to explore the use of anticipatory action beyond hydrometeorological hazards. Impact based forecasting enables anticipatory actions and revolutionises responses to weather and climate crises: turning forecasts and warnings from descriptions of what the weather will. Ensemble and deterministic flow forecasts provide information to support routine operations and issuing early warnings in a range of applications, including floods, droughts and pollution incidents. The organisation aims to enhance the efficiency of humanitarian assistance by taking anticipatory action before hazards impact vulnerable communities, thereby preventing and mitigating the disruptive effects of disasters.
