Imap Nasa’s interstellar mapping and acceleration probe, or imap, is a new mission that maps the boundaries of our heliosphere — a giant protective bubble created by the sun that encapsulates our solar system. The interstellar mapping and acceleration probe (imap) is a heliophysics mission that will simultaneously investigate two important and coupled science topics in the heliosphere: the acceleration of energetic particles and interaction of the solar wind with the local interstellar medium.

Imap Nasa Science Imap is the fifth mission in nasa’s solar terrestrial probes (stp) program portfolio. the explorers and heliophysics projects division at nasa’s goddard space flight center in greenbelt, maryland, manages the stp program for the agency’s heliophysics division of nasa’s science mission directorate. Launching in 2025, the imap mission simultaneously investigates two of the most important issues in space physics today — the acceleration of energetic particles and interaction of the solar wind with the interstellar medium. Nasa’s imap (interstellar mapping and acceleration probe) began its two year primary science mission on feb. 1 to explore and map the boundaries of our heliosphere — the protective bubble created by the solar wind that encapsulates our solar system. The johns hopkins applied physics laboratory in laurel, maryland is managing the mission development, building the imap spacecraft, and providing the mission operation.

Studying the heliosphere helps scientists understand our home in space and how it came to be habitable. as a modern day celestial cartographer, imap will map the boundary of our heliosphere and study how the heliosphere interacts with the local galactic neighborhood beyond. The interstellar mapping and acceleration probe (imap) mission will use 10 scientific instruments to chart a comprehensive picture of what’s roiling in space, from high energy particles originating at the sun, to magnetic fields in interplanetary space, to remnants of exploded stars in interstellar space. Nasa's imap mission spacecraft nasa back in september 2025, nasa launched a groundbreaking project that will allow scientists to study the heliosphere in detail for the first time.
