In this article, the functional understanding of human–machine trust is viewed from two perspectives—human centric and machine centric. the human aspect of the discussion outlines factors, scales, and approaches, which are available to measure and calibrate human trust. By connecting diverse human roles with key industry 5.0 pillars and society 5.0 principles, we avoid fragmented solutions for human centric manufacturing. Human centric smart manufacturing (hcsm) factories that integrate hmi with advanced technologies are expected to become the paradigm of future manufacturing. therefore, it is necessary to discuss technologies and research directions that may promote the implementation of hcsm in the future.
