In particular, mathematical platonism takes at face value such well known truths as that “there exist” an infinite number of prime numbers, and it provides straightforward explanations of mathematical objectivity and of the differences between mathematical and spatio temporal entities.

The historical background of mathematical platonism goes, as the name suggests, back to plato republic (596a and 522c) and it became later part and parcel of the oxford mediaeval philosophy of logic, where it was known as the problem of (the existence of) universals. In the philosophy of mathematics, platonism is the thesis according to which mathematical statements, and theorems of mathematical theo ries in particular, are about abstract objects forming a domain that those theorems describe.
