Honors Earth System Science
Earth System Science Department Of Earth And Planetary Sciences The honors program in earth system science provides an opportunity for selected students majoring in earth system science or environmental science & policy to pursue research with faculty in the department during their senior year. The earth systems honors program provides students with an opportunity to pursue individual interdisciplinary research. it consists of a year long research project that is mentored by one or more earth systems affiliated faculty members, and culminates in a written thesis.
Earth System Science A rigorous foundation in earth system science and the flexibility to create an individualized program in preparation for careers in industry, teaching, and research. Students will learn the science content and process skills necessary to make wise personal and social decisions related to quality of life, and the management of the earth's finite resources, environments, and hazards. The curriculum, which meets next generation science standards (ngss), engages students in problem solving and scientific investigation, and provides opportunities for both hands on exploration and virtual simulation. The course prepares students for advanced studies in geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy courses, and gives them more sophisticated experience in implementing scientific methods. The earth science course will explore the dynamic systems of earth and space to help students understand how earth’s systems have developed through time, how they are interrelated, and how humans impact them. In order to help develop a better understanding of the processes that shape our everyday lives, the course will integrate inquiry investigations and a variety of technologies with the study of earth as a system. In the first semester, students will investigate the universe and its stars, the planets of the solar system, and the systems that make up earth. students will examine the role of water on our planet and sun driven interactions affecting climate and weather.
