In 1885, john lewis cochran purchased vacant land to build a subdivision called “edgewater.” east of broadway and bounded by bryn mawr and foster, it was the first planned development to have paved streets, electric lighting, drainage system, street cleaning and tree trimming. After our jawdropping visit to the farm in cornish, nh, we stopped by saint gaudens national historic site on a tip from the farm's owners. we had the dogs with us, so we couldn't go inside the buildings, but once we stepped inside the grounds we did not want to leave. When pooh and anne sprague purchased a 170 acre farm in plainfield, nh on the banks of the connecticut river, they were buying a bit of agricultural history. edgewater farm had been owned and operated by one family since 1835, until the spragues purchased it. a century of soil, sweat and stewardship thrives in grand rapids. The main block features an elaborate greek revival–style entrance and portico. also on the property are former farm outbuildings including a horse barn, a cow and hay barn, and a creamery. the property also includes a family cemetery. it was listed on the national register of historic places in 1988. read more >.
