Hamer Hall Architecture Access Throughout the redevelopment we took great care to preserve many unique heritage aspects of the hall, retaining roy grounds’ base architecture and as much as possible of john truscott’s. The building represents two artistic discourses in melbourne: the architectural story of the castle and the mine: the theatrical story of the palace and the cave of jewels. The redevelopment was approved by heritage victoria. throughout the redevelopment we took great care to preserve many unique heritage aspects of the hall, retaining roy grounds’ base architecture and as much as possible of john truscott’s original interiors. In the spirit of reconciliation, architecture & access acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and on whose land our practices are located. we recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community.

The redevelopment of hamer hall was an alliance between arts centre melbourne, the architects arm, the builder baulderstone and the victorian government (through major projects victoria and arts victoria), with risk and reward shared between project participants. The hamer hall auditorium, though still massive, is now distinctly more intimate than its previous incarnation: the view from the rear circle, which resembled a gaze into some volcanic crater, is now more visually connected with its boundaries and with side and stalls spaces. The riverside podium was opened up, offering views and access to southbank. new foyers, bars, and circulation paths were inserted, while original features were carefully preserved, restored, or subtly reinterpreted. Irregular cutouts reveal windows to the river and the cbd beyond. featuring an interview with howard raggatt (arm) and peter murenu (aurecon).
