Current State Of Research On Groundwater Surface Water Interactions

Current State Of Research On Groundwater Surface Water Interactions In this study, we provide a comprehensive review of the literature concerning the application of models to investigate the interaction between groundwater and surface water. In this review, we provide an overview of the methods developed over the past several decades to investigate gw–sw interactions. these methods include geophysical, hydrometric, and tracer techniques, as well as various modeling approaches. The interface between groundwater and surface water occurs where the water table (top of the saturated zone) intersects land surface. in other words, the groundwater–surface water interface occurs in streams and rivers, lakes, wetlands, and the ocean. Water and the chemicals it contains are constantly being exchanged between the land surface and the subsurface. surface water seeps into the ground and recharges the underlying aquifer—groundwater discharges to the surface and supplies the stream with baseflow.

In this study, we provide a comprehensive review of the literature concerning the application of models to investigate the interaction between groundwater and surface water. various mechanisms governing gw sw interactions are briefly examined to elucidate the underlying processes. This special issue provides an overview of current research advances and innovative approaches in the broad field of groundwater–surface water interactions. Abstract. this study presents an integrated approach to map groundwater surface water (gw sw) interactions in a scarcely anthropized mediterranean mountain catchment (ussita) characterized by fractured limestone rocks with complex spatial temporal patterns of hydrological processes. understanding gw contributions to streams like the ussita is crucial for addressing environmental challenges. Groundwater surface water interactions refer to the processes involving the exchange of water between surface water bodies, such as rivers and lakes, and groundwater, which can occur through the loss of surface water to groundwater or the seepage of groundwater into surface water.
