The department offers doctoral degrees in ancient history, byzantine greek, classical archaeology, classical philology, classical philosophy, medieval latin, and modern greek.
Graduate Programs Classics Humanities Applicants should hold a ucla b.a. degree or the equivalent degree from another university, preferably with a major in classics, greek or latin, and a grade point average of at least 3.0 in the major. m.a.: the department does not admit students whose final degree objective is the master's degree. The university of chicago classics department offers a doctoral graduate program in classical studies; it also collaborates with the university of chicago’s division of the arts & humanities to allow students in the master of arts program in the humanities (maph) to concentrate in classics. Interested students may complete the alternative teacher certification program, at the elementary or secondary levels, alongside the master of arts or master of humanities with classical education concentration. For admission into the graduate program you should have a strong background in classics or a related field. depending on your particular interests, this might include comparative literature, history, political science, archaeology, anthropology or philosophy. The classical languages specialization is intended for students who wish to study classics at the graduate level but require additional strengthening of their language skills in order to meet the admissions requirements of most major phd programs. The master of arts in humanities with classical education concentration is a 36 hour program. the non thesis track includes 15 credits of required courses and 21 hours of electives, including an optional practicum component.
