Global Volcanism Program Wikiwand The extensive plio pleistocene haruj volcanic field covers a broad 45,000 km 2 area in central libya with very well preserved basaltic scoria cones, lava flows, and explosion craters (liegeois et al., 2005). Haruj (arabic: هروج, also known as haroudj [1]) is a large volcanic field spread across 42,000–45,000 km 2 (16,000–17,000 sq mi) in central libya. it is one of several volcanic fields in libya along with tibesti, and its origin has been attributed to the effects of geologic lineaments in the crust.

The al haruj volcanic province is a large intraplate volcanic field in central libya. while activity has decreased over the course of the last 7 ma or so, it was still sufficiently active to erupt over 2 km3 of lava a couple thousand years ago. The volcanic field contained more than 120 vents, including small shield volcanoes, spatter cones, and cinder cones. in most cases, the lava that spilled from these vents was fluid and not explosive, much like the lava produced by ongoing eruptions in hawaii. The field is part of the alkaline volcanic province in northern africa and shows no signs of fumarolic or thermal activity in modern times. no historic eruptions are recorded.

Nasa's satellite images reveal the colossal haruj volcanic field in central libya, home to over 150 extinct volcanoes! this massive discovery spans tens of thousands of square kilometers, offering insights into earth’s tectonic activity and the sahara's wetter past. The extensive pliocene to holocene haruj volcanic field covers a broad 45,000 sq km area in central libya and contains very well preserved basaltic scoria cones, lava flows, and explosion craters. A stunning composite image, made up of three years' worth of satellite photos, shows the ancient lava of libya's haruj volcanic field interspersed with patches of golden sand. The origin of the volcanism in the al haruj province and its volcanic tectonic evolution are still poorly constrained despite more than five decades of intensive hydrocarbon exploration and the discovery of numerous oil and gas fields in the sirt basin.
