Global Initiative On Disaster Risk Management Gidrm Iii Key Messages Disaster risk reduction is not enough – we need to transform our development pathways to risk informed development. risk informed development (rid) is an understanding of development that takes into account multi faceted, dynamic, interdependent, transnational, simultaneous and systemic risks. Around the globe, complex risks endanger human lives and basic infrastructure services such as health care or the water supply. nevertheless, development decisions do not always take adequate account of these risks. consecutive and cascading disasters undermine resilience.

Question: why, in the face of robust scientific knowledge of climate and disaster risk, and its causes and consequences, are the substantive part of national development policies still not persuaded of the urgent need for risk informed development?. In its third phase (2020 2023), gidrm aims at strengthening risk informed development. gidrm iii aims at strengthening risk informed development (rid) to anticipate the unpredictable. The competences and institutional capacities of policy and decision makers need to be strengthened to address risks. this is why, gidrm’s third phase from november 2020 until october 2023 focuses on risk governance and risk informed development.
Global Initiative On Disaster Risk Management Gidrm Strengthening In its third phase (2020 2023), gidrm aims at strengthening risk informed development. gidrm iii aims at strengthening risk informed development (rid) to anticipate the unpredictable. The competences and institutional capacities of policy and decision makers need to be strengthened to address risks. this is why, gidrm’s third phase from november 2020 until october 2023 focuses on risk governance and risk informed development. In 2013, the german government decided to take on a bigger role in improving global disaster risk management. and so the bmz launched the global initiative on disaster risk management (gidrm). in phase one, from 2013 to 2018, gidrm supported various political, private sector and academic networks. Generate added value by advocating for new and supporting existing partnerships “made in and with germany” for comprehensive disaster and climate risk management across countries and regions. Gidrm focuses on five main areas of intervention, namely, (1) systemic risks in development planning processes and public investments, (2) conditions of fragility and vulnerability in the context of systemic risk (3) capacity building in risk informed develop ment (4) links between gender, risk management, cli mate change in sectoral public. To effectively reduce the impacts of disasters, risk factors have to be identified and tailor made solutions developed. to achieve, this it is important to raise risk awareness, to encourage knowledge sharing between experts and decision makers and to create space for innovation across regions.
