Social Norms And Gender Equality In South Asia In a world where gender equality remains an ongoing struggle, society continues to grapple with the complexities of traditional gender roles and the quest for parity between men and women. While some cultures have moved toward more gender inclusive practices, others have experienced setbacks due to political or social issues. however, the global trend toward gender equality suggests that gender norms will continue to evolve in diverse ways across cultures. Gender transformative approaches aim to reshape gender dynamics by redistributing resources, expectations and responsibilities between women, men, and non binary gender identities, often focusing on norms, power, and collective action. We identified six areas of comparison that might be helpful for practitioners working for the promotion of global health as they make sense of social and gender norms. we then offer a definition of gender norms for practitioners and researchers working at the intersection between these two theories. The report includes findings from research commissioned by un women in brazil, egypt, fiji, india, and the democratic republic of congo, and expert recommendations for the development of an institutional, intersectional, feminist, and decolonial approach to social norms. This abstract highlights the importance of feminist theory in legal and political reforms, cultural shifts, and academic scholarship, while acknowledging the ongoing work required to achieve true gender equality in society.
