Freshwater Programme Synchronicity Earth
Freshwater Assessment 25 Of Species At Risk Through its work to engage a wide range of stakeholders to accelerate and escalate action to save the most threatened fish and other freshwater species, shoal aligns with and extends the work of our freshwater programme. 💧 why is freshwater, one of earth’s most #vital #ecosystems, so overlooked in #conservation funding? 💧 following a roundtable discussion co organised by synchronicity earth, wetlands.
Shoal Refreshing Freshwater Conservation Synchronicity Earth This work benefits local populations of commercially valuable pirarucu, also called arapaima, and freshwater turtles (podocnemis spp), while increasing food security and sovereignty, income generation, infrastructure, and capacity building opportunities of local communities. Our seven core programmes are designed to fill gaps in conservation action and funding for overlooked species, regions and ecosystems. since our founding in 2009, synchronicity earth has distributed over £27 million in funding through our programmes, much of it long term and flexible. Working together has many challenges, but it is vital. one example of this is our support for shoal, as part of our freshwater programme. shoal is growing global initiative which aims to halt the extinction and recover populations of the most threatened freshwater species in the wild. Synchronicity earth began providing core funding to international rivers in 2017 to support their work building a stronger global movement of grassroots organisations working to protect their local river systems. It brings together experts in species and ecosystem conservation from across the globe and has more than 10,000 members. within the ssc there are more than 30 specialist groups which seek to advance knowledge and action to conserve freshwater species. On 17 may, synchronicity earth held a conversation between these three freshwater conservationists representing partners supported by the programme about the importance of their rivers, the challenges they face in safeguarding them, and the opportunities there are to protect them.
