As the centerpiece of the free folded map project curriculum—used nationwide by schools and educators to teach about segregation, systemic racism, and belonging—this documentary is designed. What began as a photo project by chicago based social justice artist tonika johnson, the folded map™ project aims to encourage reflection about what urban segregation looks like and how it impacts chicago residents. Starting as a photo series, using the city of chicago's grid system to identify and capture residences at corresponding addresses on the north and south sides in order to explore the visual legacies of segregation, socioeconomic disparities and racial discrimination. Designed as a companion to the film, the folded map curriculum extends the film with a flexible, inquiry driven learning experience. through a free teacher guide and student guide, educators and learners explore race, segregation, and place using questions, activities, and resources that center lived experience and encourage reflection and action.
