What is the folded map project? tonika lewis johnson's folded map™ project visually connects residents who live at corresponding addresses on the north and south sides of chicago.* she investigates what urban segregation looks like and how it impacts residents.
Folded Map Project Fueled by their enduring friendship cultivated through the folded map project, they warmly invited their neighbors to come together, fostering connections while adding a vibrant touch to an englewood block with plants, flowers, and art. The folded map project is a community led, citizenship engagement opportunity that connects seemingly different people through real conversation. the project created “map twins” who live at corresponding addresses on the north and south sides of chicago. The vacant lots and boarded up homes she saw in her own neighborhood became less common in the white, north side communities she passed through, even along the same streets. inspired by this realization, johnson debuted the folded map project years later in 2018. As the centerpiece of the free folded map project curriculum—used nationwide by schools and educators to teach about segregation, systemic racism, and belonging—this documentary is designed.
