First Welds Mig Welding Forum
First Welds Mig Welding Forum Finally managed to get the portamig fired up today and did my first ever welds. i have a long way to go i know but thought i would share my efforts so far. I got a primeweld mig180 and tried it out for the first time. these are some of my first welds with it. please advise on what i'm doing right wrong etc. i'm a big boy so don't spare me the truth.
First Welds Mig Welding Forum I will continue to practice and beat some of the welds apart to check the penetration. i did notice my first couple of beads appeared to be more surface work, since i was working on top of 1 4" with a lower setting. Starting from the left these are my 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th welds. although none are close to "good" they actually got a lot stronger as i went along. the metal could have been cleaner i know now. Looks very much like my first attempts. you’re right, it’s such a quiet and dignified way to weld. practice is the key, and watching instructional videos. i never really carried on practicing much, i’ve found my hands are a bit shakey to get particularly neat looking welds.

It looks to me as though you are building up 'scales' of weld there rather than laying down a bead. in other words, you are laying all of your weld in a sort of pile. not sure what power you are on, but i would go higher if you can, check your gas flow is high enough and weave less. It's a good idea to test your welded joints with a hammer, a mig welder can lay a lovely looking bead but it can fail due to poor penetration. the whole secret is learning the welder & how to set it up. I'm no expert neither but what i did do is played about with each setting on the welder to see what mustered a better short weld for the thickness of the material and then jotted it down on a note pad.
