Figure X Maya Decipherment
Figure X Maya Decipherment Maya decipherment is a weblog devoted to ideas and developments in ancient maya epigraphy and related fields. we welcome contributions and the participation of colleagues and students from around the world. Here i reveal the existence of the ancient maya hand sign script through a decipherment of hand signs with numerical value and calendrical function. to do this, i devised a novel approach.
Figure8 Maya Decipherment Most importantly, the study contributes to a broader theory and methodology of decipherment, and urges the application of comparative grammatological principles to the lesser known scripts of mesoamerica. Maya signs are identified by number in thompson’s (1962) of egyptian hieroglyphic writing, thereby allowing her system or, as here, in that of macri and looper (2003). Although phonetic decipherment of the maya hieroglyphic writing system was initially achieved in the 1950’s, it was not until the 1980’s that this approach was widely accepted and became the established paradigm. In reviewing the story of maya decipherment and its colorhrl figures, however, it is important that we do not pass judgment too quickly on earlier researchers who were, as we now know, somehow mistaken or otherwise misguided.

This project has the goal to collect all the breakthroughs in the decipherment of maya hieroglyphs and illustrate them with examples from all available hieroglyphic sources like the great stela and stone inscriptions, the handwritings on pottery or the maya books etc. In recent decades, the value of hieroglyphic texts to maya archaeology has become increasingly clear. texts provide precise chronologies and insights into the maya worldview. When the spanish conquered the maya empire in the 16th century, they forced their new subjects to convert to christianity and speak and write in spanish. but long before the maya used the roman alphabet, they had created their own rich and elegant script featuring more than 800 hieroglyphs. Here i expand on that initial proposal, investigating visual contexts where the glyph for maayha’ occurs, and examining how the “iconography of place” also emphasized the character we sometimes refer to as cosmic caiman, a widespread symbol of the earth’s surface.
