Figure6 Maya Decipherment Maya decipherment focuses on the dissemination and serious discussion of ideas related to maya hieroglyphs and iconography, encompassing archaeology, linguistics, and other pertinent fields. Here i reveal the existence of the ancient maya hand sign script through a decipherment of hand signs with numerical value and calendrical function. to do this, i devised a novel approach.
Figure8 Maya Decipherment I start by discussing aspects of the scholarly record that strongly support the claim that ancient maya scribes created figures with textual hand signs as extra hieroglyphic means of expressing. Phonetic complements are very common in the maya script, and they have also played a major role in the modern decipherment of the maya writing system. phonetic complements, which cued ancient maya readers, also cue modern readers thereby facilitating the reading of ambivalent logographic signs. The text provides a comprehensive overview of maya hieroglyphic decipherment history and practices. editors classify readings into seven chronological phases, enhancing understanding of the decipherment process. Here i expand on that initial proposal, investigating visual contexts where the glyph for maayha’ occurs, and examining how the “iconography of place” also emphasized the character we sometimes refer to as cosmic caiman, a widespread symbol of the earth’s surface.
Figure 4 Maya Decipherment The text provides a comprehensive overview of maya hieroglyphic decipherment history and practices. editors classify readings into seven chronological phases, enhancing understanding of the decipherment process. Here i expand on that initial proposal, investigating visual contexts where the glyph for maayha’ occurs, and examining how the “iconography of place” also emphasized the character we sometimes refer to as cosmic caiman, a widespread symbol of the earth’s surface. Although phonetic decipherment of the maya hieroglyphic writing system was initially achieved in the 1950’s, it was not until the 1980’s that this approach was widely accepted and became the established paradigm. In compiling these readings on maya decipherment, we have therefore attempted to illustrate an exciting intellectual journey toward what some writers have called "the last of the great decipherment?. This section explores the early efforts in decipherment, key figures in maya linguistics, and the modern techniques and technologies that have shed light on this ancient writing system. Notably, i examine the hand sign and hieroglyphic inscriptions of altar q, an 8th century sculptural text that is ideal for its relative abundance of graphic hand signs, sizable hieroglyphic inscription, and wealth of contextualizing information.
