We then address the cognitive and affective benefits of fieldwork for students, followed by a discussion about teacher centered and student centered approaches to fieldwork while emphasizing the need for student autonomy.

This study examines student perceptions of fieldwork efficacy across six national and international field courses via a comprehensive, post course survey. each course was run twice over a number of years. Findings note the perceived elevated impact of field trips on students’ social and personal well being over academic advancement. field trips were found to hold latent value within a curriculum increasingly seeking spaces to promote students’ well being, personal and social development. The challenges of incorporating fieldwork into the student experience goes beyond design of the curricula and authentic assessment. ideally, it requires a partnership approach to curriculum design, and extensive consultation and collaboration with all stakeholders. This study presents the results of an investigation of the undergraduate student perception of fieldwork, specifically in the context of the affective domain, and considers the effectiveness of field based training as a pedagogical tool.
