Experiential learning is at the heart of northeastern university’s bouvé college of health sciences. from co ops to clinicals to simulations, our school of nursing students gain hands on experience they won’t get anywhere else, allowing them to enter the workforce ready to make a difference. Experiential learning provides students with real life situations working with interprofessional teams in a community setting or practice environment, and the opportunity to apply concepts about oral health and healthy aging across the life cycle. However, students struggle to associate community based experi ences with learning and clinical course objectives. this ar ticle describes the experiential learning theory approach to guide and enhance student learning in the undergraduate community health nursing clinical course. We examine the latest thinking about these three concepts and highlight some exemplary applications from the many disciplinary applications of experiential learning in higher education. We created learning moment, a novel web based educational tool that integrates principles of asynchronous learning and learning portfolios to fulfill the reflection and abstract conceptualization aspects of kolb’s learning cycle in the modern clinical learning environment.
