Eric Voegelin Modern Age
Eric Voegelin Modern Age Voegelin was born in cologne, germany, and moved to vienna, austria, at the age of nine. receiving his ph.d. from the university of vienna in 1922, he was investigated by the nazis after the anschluss and escaped to the united states in 1938 via switzerland. Voegelin's work does not fit in any standard classifications, although some of his readers [who?] have found similarities in it to contemporaneous works by, for example, hans jonas, ernst cassirer, martin heidegger, and hans georg gadamer. voegelin often invents terms or uses old ones in new ways.
Eric Voegelin Modern Age Indeed, voegelin maintains that the symbol of a “modern age” was created precisely to denote the “epoch marked by the decisive victory of the gnostics over the forces of western tradition in the struggle for existential representation” (new science, 134). In fact, voegelin's call for a new science of politics and his analysis of the history of order and disorder grow out of his endeavor to penetrate the fundamental dimensions of the modern predicament. This article argues for the timeliness of voegelin through five main aspects of his work – each of which can be considered, from the perspective of the contemporary mainstream, as rather untimely. In voegelin’s narrative, thus, the polarities of light and darkness are inverted: it is the modern age, not the middle ages, that can properly be described as an age of darkness, alienation, and disorientation.

An examination of voegelin's understanding of the genesis of modernity in more detail than hitherto has been attempted shows that four apparently different accounts of modernity's origins can be isolated in voegelin's writings. Eric voegelin is perhaps unique among a select group of thinkers who have plumbed the depths of the spiritual, intellectual and political catastrophe of the twentieth century. Twentieth century political philosopher eric voegelin is best known as a severe critic of modernity. much of his work argues that modernity is a gnostic revolt against the fundamental. Eric voegelin (1901–1985) taught law at the university of vienna, government at louisiana state university, political theory and philosophy at the university of munich, and was professor emeritus of political science at the university of munich and henry salvatori distinguished scholar at the hoover institution, stanford.
