Enlightenment 18th Century Salon Salons became popular in paris from the early 17th century. the term 'salon', however, was not used prior to the 18th century, and it is not to be confused with the contemporary parisian public exhibitions of art that went by the same name. During the 17th and 18th centuries, a unique social architecture emerged in europe, most notably in france, that profoundly impacted intellectual and cultural discourse: the salon.

By the last quarter of the 18th century, the salons had become de facto universities or tutorial groups, specialising in enlightenment ideas and philosophy. many salons focused on an item of literature, such as a text by one of the philosophes or a recent essay or pamphlet. In 18th century europe, salons served as important venues for intellectual exchange and social interaction among the educated elite. these gatherings contributed significantly to the dissemination of ideas and cultural development during the enlightenment period.

In the eighteenth century, scaled down versions began to appear in private homes: "salons de compagnie" designed for "the reception of friends, the pleasures of conversation, of games (jeu), of music," where the gatherings that i am here calling "salons" eventually took place as well. Political culture that developed during and after the revolution. this narrative presents a basic problem for historians of nineteenth century france in that it does not account for the prol feration of salon sociability that followed the french revolution. as historians of nineteenth century france observe, the salon as a form of sociabil. In the eighteenth century, despite a widely held, but nonetheless false belief, salons were not open spaces nor specifically intellectual venues. to the contrary, they were aristocratic bastions. General texts on the enlightenment, such as daniel roche's france in the enlightenment tend to agree that women were dominant within the salons, but that their influence did not extend far outside of such venues.
