Emergency Responder Training Short Line Safety Institute Through an assistance for local emergency response training (alert) grant from the pipeline and hazardous materials safety administration, the short line safety institute provides no cost hazardous materials training directly to first responders. This program provides a combination of instruction, hands on training, and interactive experience based discussions tailored to meet first responders’ needs.

Omnitrax affiliate panhandle northern railway (pnr) and the short line safety institute (slsi) recently held a two day railroad emergency response training in borger, tex., that combined a classroom based emergency preparedness, reporting and response exercise with a simulated drill for first responders and railroad staff. Slsi recognizes the need to educate and train employees involved with the handling and transportation by rail of hazardous materials to reduce human factor incidents. This month, the short line safety institute enters its tenth year of operations, having marked 155 completed safety culture assessments, and numerous introductions of programs and resources to benefit the short line industry in continuously improving safety culture.
