The thematic analysis of articles published in specialised international journals from 2004 to 2017 which was conducted by marín and his team (marín et al., 2018) confirmed the increasing attention being paid to edtech. Across this analysis of 98 educational technology journals, we can see several trends. artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and augmented reality have received a spike in interest over the past few years, and this was especially apparent this year with generative ai and chatgpt. In this paper, a literature review based approach is applied to summarize recent achievements in educational technology and present several promising directions for the future of education, including artificial intelligence powered content generation and metaverse.
