Ecosystem Monitoring

Ecosystem Monitoring The maintenance of ecosystem functions and services under substantial predicted future environmental change (i.e., their ‘resilience’) is crucial. here we identify a range of mechanisms underpinning the resilience of ecosystem functions across three ecological scales. In an effort to develop a more consistent and clear understanding of ecosystem monitoring programs, we here review the main types of monitoring and recommend the widespread adoption of three classifications of monitoring, namely, targeted, surveillance and landscape monitoring.

Ecosystem Monitoring Made Easy

Ecosystem Monitoring Made Easy Here, we review recent implementations of environmental genomics‐based methods, applied to the biomonitoring of ecosystems. Here, we present a new software system called earthranger: an open‐source platform built to help monitor, research and manage ecosystems. The programme addresses the critical need for long term, standardised ecosystem monitoring data to understand cause effect relationships between environmental pressures and ecosystem responses. Ecosystem monitoring is an increasingly important element for sensing ecosystem shifts, and for ecosystem management aiming to preserve ecosystem function and associated services under anthropogenic pressures.

Ecosystem monitoring is fundamental to our understanding of how ecosystem change is impacting our natural resources and is vital for developing evidence‐based policy and management. Perhaps the most popular method conservation biologists use to monitor ecosystem health is known as biomonitoring. Over the past five decades, ecosystem monitoring has undergone a profound transformation from labour intensive field surveys and aerial photography to advanced workflows that integrate remote sensing (rs), artificial intelligence (ai) and high performance cloud computing (chisom et al., 2024). Here, we present a new software system called earthranger: an open source platform built to help monitor, research and manage ecosystems.
