Digital Ecologies Preview
Digital Ecologies Our first book digital ecologies: mediating more than human worlds explores forms of digital entanglement across diverse geographical contexts and was published by manchester university press in december 2024. Combining approaches from more than human and digital geographies, we proffer ‘digital ecologies’ as an analytical framework for examining digitally mediated human–nonhuman entanglement.
Turnbull Et Al 2022 Digital Ecologies Materialities Encounters Combining approaches from more than human and digital geographies as well as media studies, this introductory chapter proffers ‘digital ecologies’ as an analytical framework for examining digitally mediated more than human worlds. Digital ecologies draws together leading social science and humanities scholars to examine how digital media are reshaping the futures of conservation, environmentalism, and ecological politics. Reflecting on a conference held in bonn, germany, in july 2022, which brought together a host of artists, practitioners, researchers and designers working at the human technology nature interface, this paper introduces the special issue, digital ecologies in practice. Elective course: digital ecologies. unveiling the territorial impacts of data (centers) course content while the concept of the ‘cloud’ evokes an ephemeral dimension, the materiality of the digital economy has a profound impact on physical territories, particularly through the proliferation of data centers. Beginning with the editors’ own agenda setting introduction and closing with three chapter length provocations for the future of research in the field, the book offers both an overview and intervention into the rapidly expanding field of digital ecologies. Planetary crises such as climate change and biodiversity loss threaten both ecosystem stability and human health, prompting the emergence of "digital ecologies"—integrated networks of sensors, communication technologies, and data analytics—as critical infrastructures for monitoring and mitigation. In an era of mass extinction, climate emergency, and biodiversity collapse, what role might digital media play in securing liveable futures across species.
