Curriculum based professional learning (cbpl) is an essential component of improving teacher practice and advancing student learning. for more than 10 years, learning forward has been a leader in building, facilitating, and implementing networks to drive improvement in education. Providing curriculum based professional learning at scale is challenging, complex, and contextualized. it requires time, people, money, and expertise at the systems level and at the ground level. no single school system, organization, or actor can accomplish it alone. The shared definitions and alignment outlined in this paper aim to streamline communication and research, foster ongoing learning, promote shared expertise, and strengthen the impact of cbpl on student outcomes.

This study was initiated in the context of a long term collaborative curriculum design project undertaken with a cohort of boston public school teachers to develop a high school life science curriculum based on health and disease. The paper first presents an integrated multilayered conceptual framework that combines perspectives on complex systems and agentic practices. next, it outlines the main levels and aspects of the complex system that need to be considered when examining school based professional learning initiatives.
