The jcdp data portal enables data providers to upload cetacean survey data directly and data users to explore and download datasets. the data portal was launched in summer 2022, and comprises. A visual representation of the status of cetacean species (not including subspecies or subpopulations) based on the most recent assessments published in the iucn red list version 2025 2. The jcdp aims to streamline the process of accessing and utilising these data by collating the existing and forthcoming cetacean evidence base into a single resource. these data have a wide range of applications and have the potential to support analyses at a range of spatial and temporal scales.

The latest report in our state of cetaceans series gives a tantalising glimpse into the world beneath the waves, exploring data collected on vessels of all types and picking out some of the important things we can learn about whales and dolphins from these platforms of opportunity. This report builds on the 18 years’ worth of cetacean sightings and environmental data collected during the 1,341 dedicated orca surveys conducted between 2006 2023 using vessels of opportunity, namely ferries and cruise ships. In this study, we present a novel approach to using stranding data as a tool for monitoring cetacean population trends and informing conservation strategies. Taxonomic coverage of the database is limited to the living species, although one of them, the baiji or yangtze river dolphin is possibly now extinct. coverage of taxa includes families, genera, subgenera, species and subspecies.
