Comeuppance Reviews Zardoz 1974 Zardoz is a classic sci fi film. zed (connery) finds himself fighting off horny women on a lost planet. he also has to figure the mystery of zardoz. it's a big rock head. the whole movie is a lot of fun: the ridiculous plot, "terrible" sets, and a silly performance from connery. the special effects are good for their time though. John boorman’s zardoz is one of the oddest (if not the oddest) science fiction films of the post 2001: a space odyssey (1968) and pre star wars (1977) 1970s. and given what else was being don….

Comeuppance Reviews Zardoz 1974 The savage design of zardoz’s floating head was an incredible idea for the film, stimulating curiosity when you see him in the very beginning. the sets and staging was particularly fascinating and unique for this story. the simple ingenuity that i see in this film is really outstanding. John boorman's stylish sci fi silliness about a bizarre future where a flying head named zardoz is worshipped as a god, and people are divided into two factions, immortals and mortals. What works: zardoz is an attempt at very thoughtful science fiction and the film’s strengths are found in its ideas and images. even when the story stagnates and the plot gets muddled, the potency of the images and the concepts behind them are often enough to keep a viewer interested. Zardoz, his bizarre sci fi film in which a half naked sean connery tries to bring down a community of immortals in the year 2293, has me similarly conflicted. it’s both shite and incredible at the same time, but leaning slightly towards the latter. connery plays zed, a ‘brutal exterminator’.

Zardoz, 1974 film written, directed and produced by john boorman, is one of such examples. it failed after the premiere only to enjoy minor cult status today. the plot of the film takes place in 2293 when the world is divided into two groups. John boorman’s zardoz is a remarkable amalgamation of elements from a clockwork orange, 1984 and planet of the apes that, despite its influences, still plays as a unique viewing experience. And from this fixed mask spring armfuls of rifles to kill the brutes who multiply and are legion; that's why zardoz donated the weapon. the weapon is good, the penis is evil, the scourge that spits out the seeds that spread the scourge of life on earth. John boorman ’s “zardoz” is a genuinely quirky movie, a trip into a future that seems ruled by perpetually stoned set decorators. it’s set in an ireland of 2293 that looks exactly like the ireland of today, until you get inside the vortex.
