To achieve the mission’s objectives, the horizon 2020 netzerocities project has been designed to help cities overcome the current structural, institutional and cultural barriers they face in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2030.
Enabling City Transformation Netzerocities Cities are leaders in the transformation of the way we work and live. by joining the european climate neutral and smart cities mission, you are embarking on an ambitious journey to become the first 100 cities to reach climate neutrality by 2030. Cities will apply to become a mission city through an expression of interest process run by the european commission in late 2021 and early 2022. selected cities will then join netzerocities and be supported through the process of developing a climate city contract (ccc). In its first year, the climate kic led netzerocities programme, which supports more than 100 city governments in adopting integrated green urban planning strategies to reach net zero, has already accelerated cities’ efforts through concrete ambitious actions. Inaugurated on 1st october 2021, netzerocities supports european cities to drastically cut down ghg emissions through climate action to achieve climate neutrality.
Enabling City Transformation Scaling Climate Neutral Solutions In its first year, the climate kic led netzerocities programme, which supports more than 100 city governments in adopting integrated green urban planning strategies to reach net zero, has already accelerated cities’ efforts through concrete ambitious actions. Inaugurated on 1st october 2021, netzerocities supports european cities to drastically cut down ghg emissions through climate action to achieve climate neutrality. As part of the horizon 2020 and horizon europe frameworks, netzerocities is a research project aimed at helping cities tackle the structural, institutional, and cultural obstacles preventing them from reaching climateneutrality by 2030. As cities account for more than 70% of global co 2 emissions and are home to 75% of eu citizens, they play a pivotal role in delivering solutions to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve a climate neutral future. Selected from a wide array of 103 applications involving 159 cities from 33 countries across the european union and horizon 2020 associated countries, each of the pilot cities will be a proving ground for taking systemic, inclusive, and multi lever approaches to transforming city systems. Even when climate goals can feel out of reach, netzerocities aims to ease the transition. launched in 2021, the initiative supports cities in overcoming structural barriers as the managing platform for the eu’s “100 climate neutral and smart cities by 2030 mission” (the eu cities mission).
