8b30 40 Variable Stars Cepheid Variable Stars Instructional In this lecture i explain: what cepheid variable stars are the shape of their luminosity time graph and how to find their period using the graph how the shape of cepheid variables varies. Cepheid variables are stars in which its luminosity increases sharply and falls gently in a period of time. thus, the period is correlated to the luminosity of the star and the cepheid variable can be used to estimate the distance of the star.

Cepheid Variable Stars Observations of cepheid variable stars have provided astrophysicists with data that shows a relationship between the period over which the cepheid variable star pulses and its luminosity. A cepheid variable ( ˈsɛfi.ɪd, ˈsiːfi ) is a type of variable star that pulsates radially, varying in both diameter and temperature. it changes in brightness, with a well defined stable period (typically 1–100 days) and amplitude. A cepheid variable is quite a rare type of star. it's outer layers undergo a periodic compression and contraction and this produced a periodic variation in luminosity. Most stars change from the swollen red giant phase to pulsating variable stars before they finally die, all reactions ceasing. these are cepheid variables, which expand and contract, glowing brightly and fading every so often.

Analysis of the spectrum of delta cephei suggests that along with the variation in brightness there is a velocity of somewhat over 20 km s associated with the orbit, a swing in temperature between 5500 k and about 6600 k, and a change in diameter of about 15% (kaufmann). Cepheids, also called cepheid variables, are stars which brigthen and dim periodically. this behavior allows them to be used as cosmic yardsticks out to distances of a few tens of millions of light years. There are two special types of variable stars for which—as we will see—measurements of the light curve give us accurate distances. these are called cepheid and rr lyrae variables, both of which are pulsating variable stars. Specific elemental absorption lines allow us to identify the elements present in a star's atmosphere. cepheid variables are luminous stars whose brightness fluctuates regularly, making them useful standard candles. their period luminosity relationship allows astronomers to determine distances.
