The game isn't that rule heavy and is easy to explain but has a huge amount of depth and strategy with a good amount of player interaction. the random island generation also makes each game unique as some resources might be available easily or some might be really hard to get.

Boardgamegeek I came across this thread as someone who has played countless board games and was baffled by how much i dislike catan; my son got it for christmas. i remembered hating it at a friend's house and searched google tonight after absolutely hating it again. Knowing well the catan universe and rules, we played a bunch of scenarios together, discussing what's best to do next till we hit the scenario 4 roadblock. you have to move a token from the main island to the smaller ones after all are exhausted. As a veteran of the island of catan, i can honestly say that while the 6th edition hasn’t rocked my world, it’s still as enjoyable as ever. most of the changes didn’t drastically alter my experience—i’ve seen the ports, rolled the dice, and traded sheep for wood more times than i can count. Having only been a year old when the board game was first published in 1995, i didn't experience what it was like to play catan on release. considering that modern board games were not nearly as popular as they are now, i can imagine that catan felt fresh for the time.
