On the occasion of documenta x in kassel, germany, knowles was appointed a guest professor. she taught at sommerakademie in salzburg in 1990. her work was featured in the exhibition in the spirit of fluxus and out of actions, which toured from los angeles moca. These scores range from well known directives (“ make a salad ” and “ tie up the audience ”) to more elaborate orchestrations, including pieces conceived for nam june paik and george brecht and several relating to knowles’ work as a printer. Knowles was born and raised in the new york area. after moving to vermont to study at middlebury college, she returned to the city in 1954 as a transfer student at pratt institute in brooklyn, where she focused on painting and printmaking. It was self published in two editions in 1975 and then 1978 by composer annea lockwood and fluxus co founder alison knowles to promote the performance scores of multi media women performance artists.
