Buccleuch House Cma
Buccleuch House Cma Buccleuch house was an imposing building located next to clapton common, which was originally provided hostel accommodation for single women. however, it was no longer fit for purpose and had been vacant for many years, as these photographs show. This unusual project involved working with three separate clients, each with a distinct brief, to provide new homes for three different communities: first time buyers, orthodox jewish families and older people who need extra care.
Buccleuch House Cma Buccleuch house, which completed in june 2015, is an intergenerational development in clapton, east london which provides affordable housing for three different communities. The homes for older people feature glazed winter gardens to provide more shelter and create an extra living space. located in the clapton common conservation area, buccleuch house responds to this sensitive environment with a similar scale, mass and materials to the nearby georgian terraces. The private homes are open plan with one or two bedrooms to suit first time buyers and small families, whereas those for orthodox jewish families have at least three bedrooms to accommodate larger households. these homes also include extra sinks and external areas for religious reasons. Our project buccleuch house is one of the architects’ journal exceptional #housing examples featured on the recent campaign with architects' action for affordable housing #aa4ah.

The architects worked hard to provide as many dual aspect homes as possible within this constraint, especially for the larger family homes. a protected london square stretches along the full frontage of the site that had to be retained and the site sits on the edge of the clapton common conservation area. This case study looks at buccleuch house, a purpose built 41 apartment scheme for older hackney residents which is integrated within a larger mixed apartment block. Originally built as a dominican convent in the early 1900s, the house no longer has direct religious links and has been developed as a care home since 1988. now the original character and beauty of the building is a stunning backdrop for the care home which has 18 single bedrooms, all with en suite facilities.
